1996

Private Exchange Launch

Private Exchange Launch

CaliforniaChoice, the nation’s premier and most successful multi-carrier employee benefits exchange, is launched, offering multiple health plans, defined contribution, and employee choice to California small businesses.

2001

Entrepreneur Award

John M. Word III and Edward J. “Rusty” Brown Jr., co-founders of The Word & Brown Companies, parent company of CHOICE Administrators, and creators of the CaliforniaChoice private exchange, are awarded “Entrepreneur of the Year” by Ernst & Young.

2002

Industry Recognition

CaliforniaChoice earns the prestigious Health Insurance Association of America “Innovators Award” for true industry advancement.

2003

New Parent Organization

CHOICE Administrators is established as the parent company of CaliforniaChoice and future benefits programs.
Partnership with Kaiser Permanente

Partnership with Kaiser Permanente

Partnered with Kaiser Permanente to launch Kaiser Permanente Choice Solution, a program offering seven of the most flexible Kaiser plans in one program alongside Dental, Vision, and Life products.

2004

Expansion of 51+ Groups

Built and launched CaliforniaChoice51+, a large group ancillary exchange featuring benefits from Kaiser Permanente, Cigna, and Health Net, as well as Dental, Vision, Wellness, and Life options to businesses with 51+ employees.

2008

Evolution into HSAs

Built and launched HSA California, a two-health plan exchange offering Health Savings Account (HSA) compatible high-deductible health plans from Health Net and Kaiser Permanente and optional benefits from Ameritas Group, SmileSaver, EyeMed, and Assurity Life Insurance.

2009

Ancillary Exchange Launch

Ancillary Exchange Launch

CHOICE Administrators launches ChoiceBuilder, the nation’s first ancillary-only benefits program offering employer-sponsored and voluntary Dental, Vision, and other benefits through a single program.

2015

Online Comparison Tool Rollout

CaliforniaChoice launches a new Online Plan Comparison Enrollment Tool for members to shop and compare Medical coverage options.
